NGSL Builder:

This application is designed to assist language learners and educators in utilizing the New General Service List (NGSL), which is one of the most crucial vocabulary word lists for second language learners of English. The NGSL is a freely available open source wordlist that is utilized with permission.

The app offers straightforward tools to download, email, and organize the NGSL. It also provides science-based study resources to efficiently learn the words, maintain a detailed record of progress, and email progress reports to oneself or a teacher.

The original definitions are written in simplified English, and the app also provides professional voice recordings of word pronunciations from a native North American English speaker.

About the NGSL:

The New General Service List (NGSL), often referred to as the NGSL, was published in 2013 by Dr. Charles Browne, Dr. Brent Culligan, and Joseph Phillips after conducting extensive corpus work with the respected 2 billion-word Cambridge English Corpus (CEC). The list also received input from renowned vocabulary experts such as Paul Nation from the University of Victoria in Wellington. The NGSL consists of 2,800 words carefully selected to be highly useful for second language learners of English. Despite there being over 600,000 words in the English language, these 2,800 words account for more than 90% of the words encountered in daily life. This list represents a significant update to the original 1953 GSL list (which covers approximately 80%) and is now being adopted by an increasing number of publishers, companies, and online learning tools for teaching, learning, and text analysis purposes.
